چکیده

Experimental data on bovine nucleus pulpopi has been acquired that show that the apparent permeability of the tissue’s matrix depends on the ionic concentration of the permeating fluid. These results provide evidence for an ionic concentration gradient mechanism that increases the fluid flow within the tissue, thereby increasing the apparent permeability. Our analysis suggests that 50% of the fluid flow in the tissue may be as a result of the ionic concentration gradients.

Inflammation Induces Irreversible Biophysical Changes in Isolated Nucleus Pulposus Cells

Intervertebral disc degeneration is accompanied by elevated levels of inflammatory cytokines that have been implicated in disease etiology and matrix degradation. While the effects of inflammatory stimulation on disc cell metabolism have been well-studied, their effects on cell biophysical properties have not been investigated. The hypothesis of this study is that inflammatory stimulation alter...

Acid-sensing ion channel 1a regulates the survival of nucleus pulposus cells in the acidic environment of degenerated intervertebral discs

Objective(s): Activation of acid-sensing ion channel 1a (ASIC1a) is responsible for tissue injury caused by acidosis in nervous systems. But its physiological and pathological roles in nucleus pulposus cells (NPCs) are unclear. The aim of this study is to investigate whether ASIC1a regulates the survival of NPCs in the acidic environment of degenerated discs. Materials and Methods: NPCs were i...

Effects of Morphine Dependency on Intervertebral Disc in the Rat

Background: A large proportion of patients presenting with lumbar disc disease are opium addicts in our region. It was, therefore, hypothesized that morphine might affect the intervertebral disc. We investigated the histological findings of morphine dependency on intervertebral discs in rat. Methods: Forty NMRI adult male rats (230-250 g) placed on ordinary diet and received aqueous solution of...

Influence of simvastatin on the biological behavior of nucleus pulposus-derived mesenchymal stem cells

Objective(s): This research is to study the influences of different concentrations of simvastatin on the biological activities of nucleus pulposus-derived mesenchymal stem cells (NPMSC).Materials and Methods: NPMSC were cultured with different concentrations of simvastatin (0, 0.01, 0.1, and 1 μM) and assessed to determine the possible e...

Re-swelling Degenerate Intervertebral Discs by Percutaneous Injection:an In-vitro Investigation

INTRODUCTION Intervertebral discs (IVD) are swollen structures which support substantial static and dynamic loads. Load-carriage is achieved by hydrostatic pressurization of the fluid-filled nucleus pulposus (NP) contained by the ultra-low hydraulic permeability of the endplates and mechanically strong annulus fibrosis (AF). During the diurnal loading cycle, fluid is slowly wrung out in a proce...
